CE, UKCA and ISO: which certifications you need

6min read · Updated2026-07-05

What these marks mean, the current UK position on CE vs UKCA, and how to check a factory's certificates are genuine.

Product marks vs factory standards

There are two different things people lump together. Product conformity marks (CE, UKCA) say a product meets safety and regulatory requirements. Management-system standards (such as ISO 9001) say something about how the factory runs its processes — they are not a product safety mark.

You may need both: a compliant product from a well-run factory.

CE and UKCA — the current UK position

CE is the European conformity mark; UKCA is the UK's own mark introduced after Brexit. Importantly, for most goods placed on the market in Great Britain, the UK now recognises CE marking indefinitely — there is no general cut-off forcing a switch to UKCA. UKCA remains valid and can still be used.

Some sectors have their own rules and timelines (for example medical devices and construction products), and Northern Ireland follows separate arrangements under the Windsor Framework. So the right mark depends on the specific product and where it is sold.

How to check a certificate is real

Ask for the actual test report and certificate, not just a claim. Check that the certificate covers your specific product and the relevant standard, that it is in date, and that the issuing body is credible.

A factory used to exporting to the UK or EU will provide these without fuss. Vagueness here is a warning sign.

Get it confirmed before you order

Rules change and vary by product category, so treat this as general guidance, not a definitive ruling. Confirm the exact requirement on GOV.UK or with a compliance specialist for your product.

We verify the required certifications as part of sourcing, so compliance is checked before an order is placed rather than discovered at the border.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need UKCA if my product is CE marked?

For most goods sold in Great Britain, CE marking is currently accepted with no deadline to switch, so a separate UKCA mark is not generally required. Some product categories differ — confirm for your specific product on GOV.UK.

Is ISO 9001 a product safety certificate?

No. ISO 9001 is about a factory's quality-management processes. It is reassuring, but it is not the same as a product conformity mark like CE or UKCA.
